Our SSCB biobank in Switzerland operates under the official authorization of Swissmedic, the Swiss agency for therapeutic products, and handles each sample according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards, the same applied to pharmaceuticals. The handling is regulated by GDP (Good Distribution Practice) procedures, which ensure safety at every stage of transport and management.
Since 2012, SSCB has maintained the most prestigious international accreditation, FACT–NetCord, which certifies quality in cord blood cryopreservation worldwide. In addition, the ISBT 128 system ensures that each sample has a unique and traceable identification code everywhere. Finally, SSCB has the authorization from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) for the storage, import, and export of human cells.

This place is being created in Lugano: the Institute of Regenerative Medicine. A modern building, in the heart of the hospital district, which with its 3,300 m² of laboratories will represent one of the most important investments in the field of biomedicine in Switzerland and Europe.
It is not just about spaces and technologies: it is the realization of a vision that SSCB has been pursuing for twenty years. A center where biobanking, applied research, and training share the same roof — and the same purpose: making stem cells a concrete, accessible resource, ready to use when it truly matters. SSCB is the first biobank in Europe to achieve this integration.
Inside, GMP cleanrooms will ensure absolute sterile conditions for the processing of biological samples. Genetics, diagnostics, and applied research laboratories will work on innovative projects. The biobank will be capable of preserving samples for up to 30 years, supported by a team of around 50 researchers and conference facilities open to the broader scientific community. An ecosystem designed not only to preserve, but to transform what is preserved into real treatments.
