Aplastic Anemia: the story of Henrique

Restore the immune system through umbilical cord stem cell transplantation

Aplastic anemia is a rare autoimmune disease that occurs when the patient’s bone marrow fails to produce enough blood cells, causing anemia, bleeding and infection.

Henrique was the first patient to undergo autologous transplantation of stem cells extracted from his umbilical cord for the treatment of aplastic anemia in Portugal.

When his parents decided to store the stem cells from the umbilical cord, both for the firstborn and for him, people were just starting to talk about the potential of stem cells in therapy.

Convinced of the rapid and progressive evolution of science and the possibilities it might have reserved for the future, Henrique’s family decided to sign this «different health insurance», which proved fundamental for their child, now in remission.
