A group of doctors and researchers from the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center in the United Arab Emirates announced pioneering work in stem cell therapy to repair lung damage caused by coronavirus infection. One of the most surprising aspects of this therapy is that it is administered by inhalation.
Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, the project leader, presented the results of the stem cell therapy administered to 73 COVID-19 patients, a quarter of whom were admitted to intensive care. All patients were discharged after being cured of the coronavirus infection. They were treated according to conventional treatment protocols for COVID-19 patients, supplemented by nebulisation of stem cells extracted from the patients’ blood.
After collecting the blood, the researchers separated the stem cells to “activate” them, i.e. to trigger their regenerative and repairing properties. Finally, the activated stem cells were reintroduced into the patients’ bodies in the form of a fine mist, which they simply inhaled.
Dr. Al Kaabi points out that it is a supportive treatment and non-healing therapy, which helps to alleviate the symptoms of COVID-19 rather than eradicate the virus itself. It is hypothesised that this pioneering treatment has its therapeutic effect by regenerating lung cells and modulating the immune response to prevent it from overreacting to coronavirus infection and causing further damage to healthy cells.
