Maksim’s parents heard about umbilical cord stem cells while waiting for him and his twin sister, and immediately became convinced of the importance of preserving such a valuable resource for their children’s future, while hoping they would never need it.
Life, however, confronted them with a difficult challenge when, at the age of just three years, little Maksim was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, as well as speech development delay, cognitive deterioration and other diseases associated with impaired higher mental functions.
Autism is in fact a permanent developmental disorder. People with autism often have difficulty communicating and relating to others and have a different perception of reality.
In an attempt to improve his condition, Maksim has repeatedly undergone therapies to stimulate his brain, such as micro-polarization, bio-acoustic correction and pharmacological treatment with psychostimulants. However, none of these therapies has significantly changed the situation.
However, Maksim’s family has never given up and has constantly sought new methods of treatment for autism. This is how Maksim’s mother came across a video conference held on social media by a midwife on the treatment of autism using stem cells.
Recalling that they had stored their children’s umbilical cord blood, the couple immediately contacted the bio-bank and began the process of treating their child with his cord stem cells. The stem cell transplantation took place successfully, and a few days after the treatment the little Maksim began to stutter, concentrate his eyes and listen to the dialogues around him.
Recently, Maksim underwent a second treatment, using the stem cells from his little sister’s umbilical cord – which proved to be compatible – with further surprising results. Thanks to his progress, Maksim can attend school like his sister, still having difficulty attending all the lessons, but with full support from his family and teachers.
Moved, Maksim’s parents remember the moments of uncertainty and fear they experienced: «We were afraid we couldn’t rejoice in our daughter’s achievements when our child was suffering. If we could, we would shout from the rooftops that stem cells are prodigious!».
