Post-partum defluvium: what is it and how to contrast it?

After childbirth, the collapse of estrogen levels results in a more or less acute hair loss. However, do not despair: post-partum defluvium is a physiological and temporary process.

During the nine months of pregnancy, the woman’s body undergoes major hormonal changes, which not only involve morning sickness, insomnia and the desire to eat weird food, but that also make future mothers beautiful, radiant.

During gestation, in fact, estrogens increase significantly, with a beneficial, moisturizing and regenerating effect for both the skin and the hair. In particular, the hair becomes thicker and shinier thanks to the high level of estrogen that lengthens the growth phase (anagen phase). In addition, the vasodilating substance produced by the placenta, prostacyclin, increases the blood flow to the scalp, providing more nourishment to the bulbs and promoting the birth of healthier and stronger hair.

After childbirth, however, this condition seems to change dramatically: the collapse of estrogen levels results in a more or less acute hair loss. Having no longer the “support” of estrogens, the follicles pass quickly from the growth phase to the rest phase (telogen phase), which is the last phase of the life of the hair. This is the so-called post-partum defluvium, which occurs in many women after childbirth, in a more or less intense manner.

The lactation hormone, prolactin, which weakens the hair and accelerates its transition from the growth phase to the rest phase, further influences the situation. Tiredness and any nutritional deficiencies faced by new mothers also do not contribute to the health of the hair.

However, do not despair: post-partum defluvium is a physiological and temporary process, which normally stops within 12 months after childbirth. After this period, the hair begins to grow again and the mane returns as thick as before.

To deal with this condition in the best possible way, it is advisable to use very delicate cosmetic products that do not alter the pH of the scalp. In addition, you should pay attention to your diet, making sure to take the necessary amounts of vitamins and minerals and to hydrate properly. Finally, try to “stress” your hair as little as possible, brushing it upside down and paying attention to the heat of your hair dryer.
