How long does it take for a baby belly to go away?

In nine months, the woman's body forms a new life, at the same time undergoing great physical changes: give yourself as much time to return as before

Pregnancy is a profound, magical experience: in nine months, the woman’s body forms a new life, at the same time undergoing great physical changes. Once given birth it is therefore normal for the body to take time to return to its “original forms”, but sometimes it can be a destabilizing process, especially for those who become mothers for the first time.

The biggest change is what the uterus undergoes: during pregnancy, the organ expands up to about 500 times its original size – typically that of a closed fist. It is therefore natural and understandable that the belly is still visible in the weeks following the birth, even if the uterus begins to shrink immediately, until it returns to its “normal” size and in the pelvic area, about 6-8 weeks after the birth of the baby.

The abdominal wall also needs the same period to return to the pre-pregnancy state: during gestation, in fact, the abdominals move to make room for the uterus and the growing child. After the birth, it is advisable to resume physical activity only after 6-8 weeks and after consulting your gynaecologist and a physiotherapist.

During gestation, it is also common to suffer from swelling of the legs and feet, because the body retains more fluid that, because of gravity, accumulate in the lower limbs. After the birth of the baby, excess fluids will be disposed of through urination and sweating, but be aware that it will take a few weeks to deflate completely. Holding your legs up, drinking plenty of water, avoiding salt and massage can help you speed up the process.

It should always be borne in mind that every woman is different and that genetics, health and physical conditions with which you face pregnancy and childbirth play a very important role in restoring pre-baby body. Face the changes in your body positively and remember that you have created a life in nine months: you have every right to give yourself as much time to return as before.
